This is NOT a "recycled" image from our previous auction. What you see is what you’ll get. GUARANTEED!) Rock & roll albums were something of a novelty, if not a rarity, in 1959 — apart from Elvis's releases, few of them sold well, and most that were out there by white artists, apart from hits compilations, didn't always reflect well on the music. The debut album by the Bronx-based doo wop group holds up well, however, and is well worth hearing beyond the hits "I Wonder Why," "Where or When," "Don't Pity Me," and "A Teenager in Love." The predominant subject is girls, no surprise as the work of an R&B vocal group in 1959, but there's amazingly little feeling of repetition on these 14 cuts, partly because the producers and the group did vary the sound. There are surprisingly successful attempts at a mild country sound ("You Better Not Do That") as well as pop ("Just You") and an amazing blues ("I Got the Blues") that reveals some of the real depth behind Dion DiMucci even at this early stage of his career — he may have looked and sounded like a teen idol on some of those records, but he had a musical soul all of his own that transcended the limitations of teen pop; it also goes a long way toward explaining why he was responsible for some of the best white rock & roll to come out of New York during this period. It may not be in a league with Elvis Presley's first three albums as essential listening, but it is all well played as well as beautifully sung, showing off a prodigious array of talent from the group on down to the session players involved. (REVIEW REPRINTED COURTESY OF BRUCE EDER, ALL MUSIC GUIDE /ALLMUSIC.COM/) Finding a STEREO copy of this monster Rock/Doo-Wop rarity ?!?! Forget it – not even a HOPE!!! This may be the last one you will ever see. TO SEE IF WE HAVE OTHER LISTED ITEMS BY THIS GROUP OR ARTIST CLICK HERE · CONDITION: · RECORD (IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight) (a) WE GRADE THE VINYL AS NEAR MINT. Some VERY LIGHT AND SUPERFICIAL abrasions – mostly sleeve scuffs - are (barely) visible, but are probably inaudible, and do not affect visual integrity or beauty of the vinyl. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new. (b) The record is apparently pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording! (c) “Stereo” pressing of this title is much rarer than to its mono counterpart. We estimate that mono copies of this album outnumber stereo copies by a ratio of at least 50:1. (d) The record comes in the original stock inner sleeve. (e) True Stereo copies of this album are NOT known to exist (this is the electronically rechannelled recording) (f) Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!! · COVER THE COVER IS (WEAK) NEAR MINT ! The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover: - Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and 10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 2 (VISIBLE ON BACK SIDE ONLY) - Two small, faint water stain noted on the back panel (less than 1 square inch in size each) - Cover shows JUST A HINT of yellowing on back side, apparently from aging. - Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine - Minor shelf wear noted on the bottom seam (nothing significant) NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER: - No split seams - No cut-out (drill) holes. - No cut-out corners - No saw-marks or indents - No dirt/dust rubbing stains (friction marks caused by rubbing against other covers) - No writing - No stamps - No peel-off marks - No mold or mildew spots - No stickers or labels - No water damage - No razor marks, scratches, pressure marks, lines, streaks, or cuts. - No warping - No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover - No glue traces or wax residue. - No bar codes - No RIAA stamps or stickers. This Stereo LP release dates no earlier than 1973, not 1959 (or any part of the 1960's for that matter). That fact can be told by the RCA master number used (with the "C" prefix). First issue of this LP was in May, 1959, using Columbia masters (as #1002). Next issue was 1960 (as #2002), using RCA masters. Next was in 1962. Each issue coincided with cashing in on what was happening at the time. Dion and the Belmonts split in October 1960. Dion signed to Columbia Records in 1962. This release coincided with the group's 1972 reunion at Madison Square Garden lp issued in February 1973 by Warner Bros.. Fred Clemens
